The Lions Coach, Jean Paul Akono following the non qualification of the lions for the 2013 African Cup of Nations has said he was not appointed to qualify the team but as the coach.
He was answering to a question on why he agreed to take over the team he knows he is not capable of qualifying.
To Akono, qualification was necessary but not a condition for his appointment.
He regretted that despite the efforts of his boys the team could not qualify.
“I regret and I am disappointed, I think the lions played as expected, but the gods of the stadium were not with us”.
To him, it was normal that Cape Verde created a human wall at the defense, though the lions broke through, it was not enough.
“It was either the ball hit the defense, the goalkeeper caught the ball or it hit the bar”, he said.
Akono refused to accept that Idrissou and Webo became a burden to the team saying, “I don’t know what you are accusing these two of. You may have something personal against them”.
If I allowed them in the field it is because they threatened Cape Verde defense and I removed them when I did.
Akono stressed that he substituted the younger players, at the right moment and that is it through a gradual process that they would be key players in the team.
